Letter from the Director
Welcome to the Diversity in Journalism Workshop for Arizona High School Students at the University of Arizona.
The Diversity Workshop is a Dow Jones Newspaper Fund project that has been a part of the University of Arizona School of Journalism for more than 30 years. Over the years, we have also been very fortunate to have the support of various organizations and publications. These have included the Gannett Foundation, Tucson Citizen, Concerned Media Professionals in Tucson, UA Communications, the UA Office of the Vice President of Student Affairs and the Arizona Daily Star.
The Asian American Journalists Association – Arizona Chapter have joined us this year. They join Dow Jones News Fund, Tucson’s Concerned Media Professionals, the UA Office of the Vice President of Student Affairs and the UA School of Journalism as sponsors for the program. The AAJA-Az is providing stipends for mentors and will be awarding cash prizes to the two top stories produced by the students over the course of the next week. Dow Jones Newspaper Fund covers all the registration and dorm fees for the students.
During the program, the students are working journalists supervised by reporters and editors from the Tucson Weekly, Arizona Daily Star, and faculty at the University of Arizona School of Journalism. Students will cover stories about the university, the community and the city itself. The high school students will be trained in reporting, copyediting, photography, Web production, radio- and video journalism.
We, as the entire staff of The Chronicle, strive for the highest standards of journalism excellence. We strive for a supportive environment that is conducive to learning.
